Studies show idle teens are more likely to indulge in risky behavior. Based on focus groups and attendance at Clubs that have Teen Centers more teens are apt to show up and take advantage of the programs if they have their own dedicated space. Currently, teens in the Lake Stevens area do not have that space.

The Lake Stevens Teen Room will provide a separate place for older youth to socialize independently from the rest of the facility. There will be designated staff working with the kids and include space for 12-18 computers, Robotics programming, an entertainment center, study and homework space, special programming and  a place for conversation.

The new addition will help staff and community volunteers reach more teens during those critical hours after school, and then keep them engaged.  “We want to make sure they are on track to graduate from high school and open their eyes to other opportunities,” said Mike Wetmore, Unit Director of the Lake Stevens Club.  “The new space will allow us to hold bi-weekly teen nights as outreach to kids in the community and offer other activities and programs specifically geared toward teens like a College Bound Program and Keystone Leadership.”
